It appears the Timberwolves are making progress in Kurt Rambis’ classroom.
The first-year Wolves coach often has said his top priority this season is to educate players on his system and what it takes to become an NBA contender.
After two weeks of practice and two exhibition games, Rambis is ready to put his teaching to work. Rookie point guard Jonny Flynn and his backup, two-year veteran Ramon Sessions, will have more freedom to call the team’s plays — a sign of confidence that starts with tonight’s exhibition game against Chicago at Target Center.
The move has a significant impact on Flynn, who will get most of the minutes in running the Wolves’ offense this season.
“Jonny is getting a greater grasp of what I want out there on the floor,” Rambis said of Flynn.

Adrian Peterson tied his season low in carries and had his second-lowest rushing performance on Sunday, but the Pro Bowl running back was all smiles after the Vikings beat the Rams 38-10.
Peterson said the only number that concerns him is the team’s 5-0 record.
“I get a lot of questions about, ‘How are you feeling? Are you frustrated because the run game is [getting] 50 yards here, 60 yards here?’” Peterson said. “I’ve said all along if I go into a game and we come out with 60 or 80 yards rushing as a group and we get a ‘W’, I’m excited, I’m happy. That’s what it’s all about.”
Peterson rushed for 69 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.
Scary moment
Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams received an unnecessary-roughness penalty and likely will draw a fine from the NFL after he pulled Rams quarterback Kyle Boller down by the helmet in the third quarter. Boller’s head jerked awkwardly on the blow and he got up slowly, shaking his head.
“It was nothing intentional,” Williams said. “I was going for his shoulder pads and I think he might have seen me and ducked or something and I caught him on the side of the head. But I would rather pull him down than [have] him go and throw a 90-yard touchdown.”
Gone for the season
Rams defensive tackle Gary Gibson suffered a season-ending injury on a block by Artis Hicks on Sidney Rice’s 47-yard catch in the third quarter. Gibson was engaged with right guard Anthony Herrera initially, but after Brett Favre released the ball, Hicks came in and nailed Gibbs.

Minnesota lost more than Paul Bunyan’s Axe in the game against Wisconsin on Saturday.
Starting center Jeff Tow-Arnett, a former walk-on and one of the most valued leaders on offense, has a broken leg and will end his college career.
“He was such a great teammate out on the field,” quarterback Adam Weber. “What he brought to this offense, it’s going to hurt us.”
Tow-Arnett, a senior who also suffered some damage to his knee and has two brothers on the team, had surgery on Tuesday. He played most of last season with a torn ACL, exhibiting a toughness that endeared him to his teammates.

In a preseason game that began his 19th NFL campaign, Brett Favre still felt the butterflies. Camera flashes illuminated the Metrodome on each of his eight plays for the Minnesota Vikings, and only one completed pass was captured on film. After an injury-free night without any major blunders, though, Favre declared his Vikings debut a success.
Favre’s predictably brief preseason performance was the obvious highlight of a 17-13 Vikings victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday night, preserved by a goal-line stand by the third-stringers.
“I just didn’t want to fumble the snap,” Favre said. “Wanted to make sure I got the handoffs. If you complete passes, great. But I was nervous about that.”
Loudly cheered by the same fans who used to loathe him when he played for the NFC North rival Green Bay Packers, Favre played two series and went 1 of 4 for 4 yards. He moved around all right, and his passes had zip, just no direction.
