Havlat Welcomes Jagr Back

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 16th February 2010

Wild winger Martin Havlat learned Monday not a lot has changed with Jaromir Jagr.

Now playing in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League, the former NHL superstar and future Hall of Famer returned to Canadian soil during his first Olympic practice Monday with the Czech Republic.

“Jagr is always smiling and laughing,” Havlat said. “He’s got a birthday today. I know he’s not 29 anymore, but he’s still the same guy. He was pretty good on the ice today.

Havlat’s thrilled to be sharing the ice once again with Jagr, who turned 38 Monday. Jagr is one of Havlat’s heroes, and in 2002 during the Salt Lake City Winter Games, Havlat remembers like it was yesterday the first time he played a shift with Jagr.

With 12 minutes left in a game with Sweden, coach Josef Augusta tapped Havlat on the shoulder and told him to get ready for first-line duty with Jagr and Robert Lang.

“I jump on the ice, hit [Michael] Nylander, got five plus a game misconduct. That was it. That was my first and my last shift,” Havlat said, laughing.

But Jagr wanted to play with Havlat again, and the two were linemates against Canada.

Jagr told Havlat, “When I get the puck, don’t come anywhere near me. Just get open, and I’ll get you the puck.”

Havlat did as told and scored twice in a 3-3 tie against the eventual gold medal winners.

“Jagr’s the biggest name we had, the biggest name we have — the best Czech player in my opinion,” Havlat said.

Jagr says he is excited to be back in North America, but also modest in his expectations. “I haven’t played in the NHL for two years. Nobody is expecting anything,” he said. “That’s a big advantage for me.”

Backstrom Is Sharp, But Wild Isn’t

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 12th February 2010

It’s the one that got away, both on the scoreboard and in the points column.

Despite making a pair of huge second-period saves to keep it a 2-1 Phoenix lead Wednesday night, Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom couldn’t stop the shot that ultimately gave the Coyotes the 3-2 victory in regulation. And for good reason: Backstrom, making his first game appearance since Jan. 23 because of a back injury, never really saw it.

Radim Vrbata’s let’s-see-what-happens try at Backstrom 5 minutes, 41 seconds into the third period hit the side of the net. However, rather than careening into the corner as expected, the puck bounced into the air, clanked off the “32″ of Backstrom’s game sweater and landed just beyond the red line for a 3-1 Phoenix lead.

“I’ve never seen that happen before — he missed … by one or two [feet],” said Backstrom, who had been 5-1 against Phoenix at home in his career.

Brent Burns Brings Old Spark Back To Ice, Just In Time For Minnesota Wild

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 3rd February 2010

The Wild have made some intelligent moves this season, but possibly none better than simply outlasting the concussion suffered by Brent Burns.

While the Calgary Flames and Anaheim Ducks, two teams battling the Wild for a Western Conference playoff berth, couldn’t wait until closer to the March 3 trade deadline before joining the Toronto Maple Leafs to swap some top talent this week, the Wild took the unassisted route.

On Jan. 21, they simply notified the league that they had added Burns to their roster.

“It was almost like we made a trade,” coach Todd Richards said. “When you’re missing a guy for so long, obviously that’s a huge trade for us, the way that it feels, because you’re bringing in a high-impact player.”

The uncertainty surrounding recovery from a concussion places a team in limbo. Andrew Ebbett and Derek Boogaard missed only a handful of games after hits to the head, but Petr Sykora had his season and his tenure with the Wild derailed, and Pierre-Marc Bouchard will miss his 55th game tonight when the Wild play the Dallas Stars at the American Airlines Center.

After missing 19 games at the end of last season, Burns was hurt on Nov. 28 and missed 29 more.

He’s back, bringing with him flair, enthusiasm and contagious optimism.

“It’s a great asset to have back on the team,” forward Kyle Brodziak said Monday. “It’s funny how a guy can miss a couple of months and look like he hasn’t missed a game.

Wild’s Havlat Is Willing, If Able

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 1st December 2009

Martin Havlat looked explosive and skilled during his return to a very short practice Monday, and now he hopes it translates onto the ice if he’s able to return for Wednesday’s game against Nashville.

Havlat, who missed the past four games because of a hamstring injury, said, “I’d like to play if everything goes right [in practice today].”

Havlat, who signed a six-year, $30 million deal July 1, has had a disappointing start to his Wild career, with two goals and six assists in 16 games.

“It’s a long season,” Havlat said. “We were getting chances. I was creating chances for the other guys, but it just wasn’t going in pointwise. But I wasn’t playing the way I wanted to, or the way everybody wanted me to play.

“I know I’ve got to be better. I’ve got to work hard, and I know sooner or later the points are going to come.”

Room Full Of Battlers Is Emerging

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 30th November 2009

Examine Saturday’s victory at Colorado, and it might be impossible to come up with another game in which the Wild has spent more time in the opponent’s zone. The Wild probably spent three-quarters of the game forechecking the rubber off the puck.

Now, it’s safe to say the Wild is starting to get it. There’s a reason why the team has earned points in 10 of the past 13 games (7-3-3) and in each of the past four (3-0-1).

As coach Todd Richards loves to say, the Wild’s level of “compete” these days is off the charts. It has a lot to do with General Manager Chuck Fletcher’s ability to add motivated newcomers, such as Chuck Kobasew, Andrew Ebbett and Guillaume Latendresse.

But it also has to do with a bunch of veterans setting the tone.

“The compete factor has been great,” Richards said. “It comes down to the leadership in the room. As a coach, you can preach it, you can ask for it, but it’s got to come from in there. Our leadership group is doing a great job.

Koivu’s goal, 2 assists help Wild end Leafs’ 2-game win streak

Posted by GameSetMatch on 11th November 2009

The Minnesota Wild took advantage of the lackluster Toronto Maple Leafs.

Mikko Koivu scored one goal and assisted on two others in the second period as the Wild ended the Maple Leafs’ two-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory Tuesday night.

Marek Zidlicky broke a 1-1 tie at 5:44 of the period. Then, 26 seconds after Koivu beat Jonas Gustavsson at 17:29, Greg Zanon made it 4-1.

Niklas Backstrom made that stand up with 37 saves for the Wild (7-10), who also got goals from Martin Havlat and Owen Nolan into an empty net to win for the fourth time in five games. Minnesota won in Toronto for the first time (1-4) since joining the NHL in 2000-01.

Martin Havlat is good, but Wild still wonder: how good?

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 7th October 2009

Martin Havlat is no Marian Gaborik.

Many associated with the Wild believe that’s a good thing.

When Gaborik, the Wild’s all-time scoring leader and all-time leader in groin injuries, skated away to the New York Rangers through free agency last summer, Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher moved quickly to obtain Havlat, another Eastern European scoring sensation whose statistics are similar to Gabby’s.

Said Fletcher: “They’re different hockey players. The intention wasn’t to replace Marian Gaborik, but (Havlat) was one of the top free agents available.”

At 28, Havlat is “entering the prime of his career,” Fletcher noted. “He’s a talented player, a player who was nearly a point-a-game player in Chicago last season, a dynamic offensive player. He can score goals, but he’s also a terrific playmaker.”

Going into the Wild’s home opener against the Anaheim Ducks at 8:15 tonight at the Xcel Energy Center, the 6-foot-2, 217-pound Havlat is the logical bet to be the team’s top scorer this season.

Wild defenseman Brent Burns like his old self after recovering from concussion, shoulder surgery

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 2nd October 2009

After a difficult season that ended with the Wild missing the playoffs and Brent Burns on the sideline because of a concussion, the team’s blue line looks like one of its strongest assets this season partly because Burns is healthy.

Actually, he’s more than simply healthy.

He’s the Brent Burns of old.

Greg Zanon, signed over the summer as a free agent and paired with Burns at defense during several exhibition games, had his eyes opened.

“He’s just a dynamic player,” Zanon said. “He is one of the top, and he’s going to be one of the top players in the league for a while.”

Like many in the Wild organization, assistant general manager Tommy Thompson couldn’t wait to see Burns back on the ice this fall.

“Since the start of training camp, the single most pleasing thing for me is to see Brent Burns back and able to function at the level he was at prior to his injury,” Thompson said. “Because of the way he approaches hockey and he approaches life, he brings a lot of energy to the situation.

“He’s a very important guy to the team for two aspects: his hockey ability and his spirit.”

Wild counting on winger Owen Nolan to tutor in addition to scoring goals

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 1st October 2009

When Cal Clutterbuck needed feedback last season, he didn’t get it from his coaches, he got it from Owen Nolan.

Who would have thought?

“It’s good to have someone like that reassure you,” Clutterbuck said, “especially last year because the coaches didn’t talk to you very much, and you didn’t really know what was going on.

“There’s newspaper articles and press conferences, and you’ve got to kind of find out what the coach thinks of you through those.”

There was nothing so cryptic from Nolan. The former No. 1 overall draft pick who made a name for himself with his preternatural play and brash, no-apologies demeanor had taken the forward under his wing.

“He seems to have taken a special interest in me,” Clutterbuck said. “I don’t know if he sees a little bit of himself in me, but for whatever reason, I think he might have seen a little bit of potential in me and wanted to help me out and make sure I stayed the course last year.

“A lot of his help was encouragement, letting me know to keep going — that what I was doing was effective, even though I may not have been scoring.”
