Viking Problems

Posted by David on 25th May 2010

Warning: This article may contain information about Brett Favre. Regardless of how annoying talking and/or hearing about Brett Favre may be, it is evident that Minnesota’s chance of making another Super Bowl run depends on Favre coming back. However, Minnesota has other problems on their plate. But even with all of these problems, NFL Football Lines would suggest that the Vikings would find themselves in the playoffs, yet again.

Even before Favre came, Minnesota was a playoff team. However, the idea of Tavaris Jackson being the team’s quarterback is not a very appealing thought. While he has always had some raw talent, he has never been able to utilize it in winning fashion. If he took over, it would make the load even tougher on Adrian Peterson. Speaking of Peterson, while he may be the best running back in the league, he had his fair share of problems last year. Peterson lost six fumbles during the regular season, and also fumbled the ball twice in Minnesota’s NFC Championship playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints. And, Peterson’s backup, Chester Taylor, recently bolted for Chicago. So regardless if Favre comes back or not, Peterson has his hands full.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Vikings could be looking at suspensions. When all on the field, the Vikings have an elite defense, which is anchored by their defensive line. But because of their incident with water pills, Kevin and Pat Williams will each have to serve four-game suspensions. Luckily for Minnesota, the beginning of their season is rather easy, as no opponents in those first four games made the playoffs last year. But having two elite players missing 25% of the season will certainly throw things off.

Overall, no matter what happens, the Vikings are still a good football team. But if Brett Favre, Kevin Williams, and Pat Williams couldn’t lead the Vikings to the Super Bowl last year, what can happen this year? Only time will tell.

Favre not worried about return to Lambeau

Posted by GameSetMatch on 29th October 2009

Brett Favre cut off the question in midsentence.

Are you prepared, if you do hear boos out there …

“I’ve heard boos in that stadium before,” said Favre, the longtime Green Bay Packers quarterback who will return to Lambeau Field on Sunday as a Minnesota Viking.

“Honestly. Numerous times. That was obviously different. As a player there, you don’t expect to hear that in your home stadium. But I didn’t play every game in that stadium very well. I played (well) a lot, but there was some times where we struggled, and that was kind of a kick in the stomach hearing those boos.

“It wasn’t often. There was way more cheers. And I suppose there will be a little bit of both this week.”

Brett Favre delivers Minnesota Vikings to 4-0 with win over his former team

Posted by GameSetMatch on 6th October 2009

Vikings owner Zygi Wilf’s already-lofty opinion of Brett Favre was elevated after his new quarterback’s miraculous 32-yard touchdown pass to beat the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 27.

“After watching last week’s game, throwing the ball the way he did, it made me realize that there is something about him that makes him so special,” Wilf said before Monday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. “That’s what surprised me most.”

Wilf readjusted his perception after Favre nearly pulled off perfection, in leading the Vikings to a 30-23 victory over the Packers at the Metrodome.

“What can I tell you?” Wilf said. “He keeps on surprising me — pleasantly.”

Favre, now 24-24 in games played in domed stadiums, dominated his former team, completing 24 of 31 passes for 271 yards, with three touchdowns and no turnovers. His passer rating was 135.3; a perfect rating is 158.3.

Power to the purple people: Vikings fans heartily greet ex-nemesis Favre

Posted by GameSetMatch on 28th August 2009

What once was unthinkable became reality Friday night under the big white top of the Metrodome: Brett Favre received a standing ovation in Minnesota. Long considered the most dastardly of villains in Minnesota sports, Favre’s decision to sign with the Vikings has instantly turned him into a quarterback viewed as the state’s white knight and the team’s key to a Super Bowl run.

After spurning coach Brad Childress’s initial advances, Favre signed with the Vikings on Tuesday and, three days later, started their preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Favre looked a little rusty and went 1-of-4 passing for
4 yards in two series during a 17-13 victory over the Chiefs. But he was welcomed with open arms by a Vikings fan base that used to despise him like no other during his 16 seasons with the NFC North rival Green Bay Packers.

Favre signs with Vikings

Posted by GameSetMatch on 19th August 2009

Brett Favre is coming back for more. The 39-year-old quarterback turned his back on retirement for the second time in as many years, agreeing Tuesday to play for the Minnesota Vikings.

“I felt I did everything I possibly could do to get where I need to be,” Favre said at his introductory news conference Tuesday. “You’re 39, your arm may not feel like it did at 21. But the pieces are in place that you don’t have to do that much and I agree with that.

“If they were willing to take that chance, I was, too.”

Favre finally decided that he didn’t want to live with regrets.

“I don’t know how I’ll feel a year from now, five years from now, but I didn’t want to say what if,” he said.
