Source: LT to visit Vikings

Posted by GameSetMatch on 10th March 2010

The Minnesota Vikings could have one high-profile backup running back.

LaDainian Tomlinson is going to visit the team on Thursday, a source confirmed to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. SI.com first reported the visit.

Tomlinson was released by the San Diego Chargers last week and has scheduled a number of visits with potential teams.

Tomlinson ranks eighth on the NFL’s all-time rushing list with 12,490 yards. His 138 career rushing touchdowns rank second, and his 153 total touchdowns rank third.

Vikings sack Romo six times to advance to NFC title game vs. Saints

Posted by GameSetMatch on 18th January 2010

“This is what I came back for.”

For the adrenaline rush. For the in-your-face touchdown. For another shot at the Super Bowl.

Brett Favre wanted all of it, and now he’s got it.

Four — count ‘em, four — touchdown passes from Minnesota’s 40-year-old quarterback sent the Vikings to the NFC Championship Game with a determined 34-3 rout of the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

“Probably the most fatigued I got today was celebrating,” Favre said, smiling.

The Vikings (13-4) will take on the Saints next Sunday at New Orleans (14-3), with the winner going to the Super Bowl in Miami — the only reason Favre put retirement on hold for a second straight season.

Vikings extend Childress deal

Posted by GameSetMatch on 20th November 2009

The Minnesota Vikings signed Brad Childress to a contract extension that will keep the coach with the team through the 2013 season, a source told ESPN.com Thursday.

Financial terms weren’t immediately available but the deal is believed to be between $4 million and $5 million a year, the source said. In 2006, Childress signed a five-year, $10 million contract, which was scheduled to expire after the 2010 season.

“Brad has done a tremendous job leading this football team and we value the positive environment he has created for the Minnesota Vikings on and off the field,” Vikings owner Zygi Wilf said in a statement. “He has continued to positively impact this team and create a strong foundation for future success.”

Favre not worried about return to Lambeau

Posted by GameSetMatch on 29th October 2009

Brett Favre cut off the question in midsentence.

Are you prepared, if you do hear boos out there …

“I’ve heard boos in that stadium before,” said Favre, the longtime Green Bay Packers quarterback who will return to Lambeau Field on Sunday as a Minnesota Viking.

“Honestly. Numerous times. That was obviously different. As a player there, you don’t expect to hear that in your home stadium. But I didn’t play every game in that stadium very well. I played (well) a lot, but there was some times where we struggled, and that was kind of a kick in the stomach hearing those boos.

“It wasn’t often. There was way more cheers. And I suppose there will be a little bit of both this week.”

Brett Favre delivers Minnesota Vikings to 4-0 with win over his former team

Posted by GameSetMatch on 6th October 2009

Vikings owner Zygi Wilf’s already-lofty opinion of Brett Favre was elevated after his new quarterback’s miraculous 32-yard touchdown pass to beat the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 27.

“After watching last week’s game, throwing the ball the way he did, it made me realize that there is something about him that makes him so special,” Wilf said before Monday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. “That’s what surprised me most.”

Wilf readjusted his perception after Favre nearly pulled off perfection, in leading the Vikings to a 30-23 victory over the Packers at the Metrodome.

“What can I tell you?” Wilf said. “He keeps on surprising me — pleasantly.”

Favre, now 24-24 in games played in domed stadiums, dominated his former team, completing 24 of 31 passes for 271 yards, with three touchdowns and no turnovers. His passer rating was 135.3; a perfect rating is 158.3.

Rice quietly making a big contribution

Posted by GameSetMatch on 1st October 2009

Whether making a big catch or clearing a path for running backs, the receiver is healthy and on a roll.

Yes, Greg Lewis caught the winning touchdown pass from Brett Favre as the Vikings beat the 49ers 27-24 in the final two seconds Sunday.

And Percy Harvin ran a kickoff back 101 yards for a touchdown, tied for the second longest return in team history.

But one of the unsung receivers on the team is Sidney Rice, who is off to a great start as the Vikings have gone 3-0. The third-year receiver caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Favre to put the Vikings in front 7-0 in the first quarter and wound up with four catches for 56 yards.

Minnesota Vikings will pummel in pink to help fight breast cancer

Posted by GameSetMatch on 29th September 2009

Chad Greenway is proud to join teammates Brett Favre, Chester Taylor and Antoine Winfield in wearing pink cleats to support the NFL’s breast cancer awareness effort.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the NFL has invited many of its top players — including Minneapolis native Larry Fitzgerald Jr. — to wear pink cleats and gloves during Week 4 games. No game, however, will be more high-profile than Monday night’s, when the Vikings play host to the Green Bay Packers at the Metrodome, and no player will be more high-profile than Favre.

He might be a football icon, but Favre certainly isn’t a fashion icon.

But Monday won’t be the first time Favre has donned pink. His wife, Deanna, survived breast cancer, and she once asked him to wear a pink hat.

Laughing matter: Vikings’ Peterson cracks jokes about back injury

Posted by GameSetMatch on 25th September 2009

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson said Thursday that his back injury is “not a big deal at all,” meaning he should play against the San Francisco 49ers this weekend.

Peterson has been limited in practice the last two days because of the injury. He ran for 92 yards and one touchdown last weekend against the Detroit Lions and leads the NFL in rushing heading into the Vikings’ Sunday home opener against the 49ers.

“God willing, I will be out there playing,” Peterson said. “Not a big deal at all.”

Even with Brett Favre at quarterback, Peterson is the key to the Vikings’ offense. He draws so much attention from opposing defenses who stack eight or nine men near the line of scrimmage that he opens up things for the passing game. The reigning NFL rushing champion has run for 272 yards through two weeks and already has scored four touchdowns.

Vikings are 2-0 but still looking half bad

Posted by GameSetMatch on 21st September 2009

The excitement in the Vikings’ locker room Sunday after a 27-13 victory over the Detroit Lions at Ford Field was palpable and justifiable.

The Vikings, winners of 14 of the past 15 games in this series, earned the season sweep against the winless Lions last season by a mere six points.

So after a two-touchdown win, securing the second 2-0 start in the Brad Childress era, players could make light of regrouping and rallying after lethargic starts in both games.

“If the end result is us coming up with a W,” Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield said, “we can start slow the whole year.”
