Weber passes out praise

Posted by GameSetMatch on 5th November 2009

The Gophers quarterback credited his line and receivers for his big game against Michigan State.

Talk about your triple plays.

In one explosive game, Gophers quarterback Adam Weber had a career-high 416 passing yards and five TD throws without Eric Decker in the game. He helped the Gophers to a much-needed 42-34 victory over Michigan State and passed Bryan Cupito as the school’s career leader in passing with 7,509 yards.

So what was Weber saying Tuesday? That it was his receivers who were wonderful. That credit was due his offensive line, which gave him the best protection of the season. Don’t be surprised. Weber was a team-first, stand-up guy when things weren’t going well. It only makes sense he’d spread the credit after a big victory.

Gophers center out with broken leg

Posted by GameSetMatch on 8th October 2009

Minnesota lost more than Paul Bunyan’s Axe in the game against Wisconsin on Saturday.

Starting center Jeff Tow-Arnett, a former walk-on and one of the most valued leaders on offense, has a broken leg and will end his college career.
“He was such a great teammate out on the field,” quarterback Adam Weber. “What he brought to this offense, it’s going to hurt us.”
Tow-Arnett, a senior who also suffered some damage to his knee and has two brothers on the team, had surgery on Tuesday. He played most of last season with a torn ACL, exhibiting a toughness that endeared him to his teammates.

Offense looking to avoid roller coaster effect against Cal

Posted by GameSetMatch on 16th September 2009

Through two games, the Gophers offense has both hit and missed, scored when it mattered but too often squandered opportunity. So many numbers look good, yet the bottom line needs to improve. For example:

It was hard not to think that quarterback Adam Weber could have done more in Saturday’s 20-13 victory over Air Force. This despite a 20-for-29, interception-free performance that included his going 15-for-18 in the second half.

You think the Gophers should run the ball better, and then you see they averaged 4.5 yards per rush.

The Gophers are 2-0 thanks in large part to clutch offensive play in the second half of both games — enough to make up for having converted on only 32 percent of third downs and sometimes struggling on short-yardage situations. It’s fair to assume things have to get a lot better if the Gophers hope to upset eighth-ranked California on Saturday.
