It seemed like the most unenviable of tasks for the Twins. With wins needed in each of the final two contests against the Blue Jays to capture the series victory, the club’s first test came on Wednesday night against Toronto’s ace, Roy Halladay.
Halladay had never lost to the Twins, going 8-0 in 12 career appearances (10 starts) against the club. Minnesota, in fact, was the only American League team that had never beaten him.
But at a time when their postseason hopes are barely being kept alive, entering the day 6 1/2 games back of the Tigers in the AL Central race, the Twins know that almost every game is a must-win. And on Wednesday night, they were finally able to do what they had not done before — beat Halladay.

Twins first baseman Justin Morneau left Monday’s 8-5 loss to the Rangers in the fourth inning after experiencing dizziness.
The Twins said that Morneau was removed from the contest for precautionary reasons, but after the contest, manager Ron Gardenhire said the team thinks it might be an inner-ear infection that was causing Morneau’s dizziness.
“He was feeling pretty bad out there,” Gardenhire said. “We got him out of there. He’s day-to-day. See how he’s feeling in the next day or so.”

Justin Morneau may be the reigning Home Run Derby champion, but it might be the other of the Twins’ M&M boys who is more likely to take part in this year’s event on July 13 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
Both Morneau and Joe Mauer were named to their third All-Star Game on Sunday, and Morneau has taken part in the Home Run Derby in each of his first two trips to the Midsummer Classic. However, when asked about the Derby on Sunday, Morneau said that he’s leaning toward skipping this year’s event to give himself a little more rest.

The Twins haven’t found it particularly easy to pull out wins in close road games this season.
So perhaps it should come as no surprise that manager Ron Gardenhire described Tuesday night’s 2-1 win over the Royals as one his team had to “scratch out.” Scott Baker labored through his five innings for the Twins, while the offense managed to eke out two runs off Royals starter Brian Bannister in a snail’s-paced contest that lasted more than three hours when only three runs were scored.
